Stacy is haunted by how he spends his time in north Florida. It’s the central question in this film directed by Drew Miller about how we make things and maybe more importantly about what keeps us from making them. In Surf Film, Stacy wants to make a film that’s inventive and thoughtful, a sort of ode to the place and culture that shaped him, but it’s the same place and culture that fuels his self-doubt and dread. He runs into that provincial skepticism in the parking lot, with old friends on the beach, and everywhere he stops along the coast he wonders: Will it be good? Will anyone care? By the time he reaches the bottom of that rabbit hole and crosses the county line, an unlikely friend reminds him in a lonely moment that it’s the goal that’s good, and it’s the act that matters. Stacy cares, so others might, too. Make the thing.
